Woodside’s Scarborough gas project, off the coast of Western Australia, is one of the most polluting fossil fuel projects currently planned in Australia.
Climate change is the greatest threat to our fragile Great Barrier Reef. Yet Scarborough was approved without its potentially disastrous impacts to the reef ever being assessed by the Federal Environment Minister.
That’s why EDO launched a case on behalf of the Australian Conservation Foundation, to ask the court to stop this mega gas project in its tracks because of the impacts our client argues it will have on the reef.
Our case is the first time the Federal Court has been asked to make a finding of fact, on the basis of objective scientific evidence, that greenhouse gas emissions from a major offshore fossil fuel project are likely to significantly impact the reef by fuelling climate change.
If we win, this case could set a critical precedent for the environmental assessment of new fossil fuel projects across Australia in relation to the climate damage they would cause.
Our lawyers can’t bring landmark cases to court without you.
Scarborough is just one of many polluting coal and gas projects planned across Australia that could put our precious ecosystems like the Great Barrier Reef at risk.
We need your help to protect our climate and wildlife from the harmful impacts of major new fossil fuel developments.
