Coal is cooking our Great Barrier Reef
Heat-trapping pollution from coal is a death sentence for our Great Barrier Reef which is being cooked by rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change.
Right now a devastating bleaching event is unfolding across the Reef, with damage stretching more than 1,100 kilometres from Lizard Island to the Keppel Islands. It could be the worst mass bleaching for our Reef on record.
Bleaching events like this have been likened to an underwater bushfire due to the destruction they cause. Our fragile Reef could soon reach the point of no return.

Reckless new coal mines that pollute and warm our planet are still being approved.
In February, as coral bleaching began, the Queensland Government waved through a preliminary approval of the Winchester South coal mine.
The mine would create a staggering 583 million tonnes or more of carbon pollution over its lifetime — more than Australia’s entire emissions produced in 2022.
The Winchester coal mine in Queensland’s Brigalow Belt will fuel habitat loss and could be an absolute disaster for threatened species including koalas, quolls, and greater gliders.
Whitehaven Coal plans to destroy around 570 hectares of wildlife habitat to build its coal mine.
This includes destroying 169 hectares of koala habitat and more than 130 hectares of greater glider habitat, pushing these much-loved Aussie icons closer to extinction.
