The case at a glance:
- Whitehaven Coal plans to dig up to 17 million tonnes of coal each year for 28 years, generating a staggering 583 million tonnes or more of climate pollution over its lifetime.
- The mine, proposed in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, would destroy at least 2,000 hectares of wildlife habitat that is home to threatened species including koalas and greater gliders.
- Whitehaven Coal is seeking a Mining Lease and Environmental Authority for its proposed mine after the warmest year on record in 2023 and a fifth mass bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef in March.
- EDO lawyers are representing the Mackay Conservation Group and the Australian Conservation Foundation in a legal challenge to seek a recommendation of refusal of the Winchester South coal mine due to the unacceptable impacts it threatens to cause.
